The Frustrations of Being a Gooner

If you are like me, you are impatiently awaiting some of these Arsenal transfers to come true.  You are also checking Twitter every two minutes turning your kid’s favourite cartoon over to check if there’s any breaking news on Sky Sports.

Why year after year do we leave it so late in the window?  All our transfers should be done as early as possible so the team have time to mould and gel so we do have a good start to the season.  Pre-season isn’t so far away, yeah?

In my opinion, we lose so much valuable time by doing this.  We should have all signings on the plane when we take off for our pre-season tour.  Added to that, by stringing these transfers along, it gives other clubs time to swoop in for the kill – how many times have we seen that happen?

I think Gonzalo Higuain will be a very good signing if it comes off.  He’s just the kind of player we need;  he is someone who can score the ugly goals that we seem incapable of scoring at times.  I find it so frustrating at times when we try to walk it in the net.  We need to be more clinical in front of goal and Higuain can provide that.  On the other hand, Yaya Sanogo has looked good from what I saw of him in the Under-20’s French side, and definitely would make a good squad player – better than the likes of Nicklas Bendtner and Marouane Chamakh.  He seems like he could fit in nicely.

I’m not so sure on Maroune Fellaini to be honest, because I can’t see how he would fit in into the current squad.  The only time I can see him play would be against the harder teams as a holding midfielder where he excelled for Everton against the top four.  I’m not saying he’s a bad player, but don’t think him and Jack Wilshere would compliment each other – at least not like Santi Cazorla or Tomas Rosicky.

I still believe we are four quality players away from a great squad.

  • We need a goal keeper with experience who can push the other younger keepers on.
  • Another centre back is essential, and that’s been our problem area for the last few years.  We develop one decent partnership until one of the two gets injured and our cover has simply been not good enough.  *Ahem* Sebastian Squillaci.
  • The next essential position is a quality holding midfielder who can break up play and take command much like Patrick Vieira used to in the glory years.
  • And last but not least, the main position that we struggled with last year a striker. We need a player who can guarantee at least 20 goals a season, and the rest of the team takes care of itself.  We saw this year with all of the midfield contributing.

I really hope we can push on this season as the money is apparently there.  None of us want another season that ends up with us falling away after Christmas and fighting Spurs for fourth place we are capable of so much more……
