Argos Sign Chad Owens to a Two Year Extension

The Toronto Argonauts have locked up last year’s CFL Most Outstanding Player, giving Chad Owens a two year contract extension.

Owens who starred as a receiver and a kick returner for the Argos set the CFL’s single season all-purpose yardage mark with 3,863 combined yards last season.  Owens continues his stellar play through the CFL playoffs helping the Argos to wins over the Edmonton Eskimos, Montreal Alouettes, and Calgary Stampeders in helping the Argos to win the 100th Grey Cup Championship.

“Extending Chad Owens’ contract helps us to create continuity and ensures another key player remains in Double Blue for the foreseeable future,” said GM Jim Barker in a team release. “Chad is a dynamic player whose work ethic resonates within our locker room, and we are very happy he has committed to being an Argonaut.”

The 31-year-old Owens, known by his nickname “The Flying Hawaiian” has been outstanding in Toronto playing three years with the team.  While no financial terms were released, it is believed that the move makes Owens the highest paid non-quarterback in the CFL.

“I am very excited for the opportunity to remain in Toronto and continue to build off of what we were able to accomplish in 2012,” Owens said in the release. “I am looking forward to sharing more successes with the city, my teammates, our coaches and with the fans as we strive toward our ultimate goal of winning another Grey Cup.”

Owens and the Argos will begin defence of their Grey Cup Championship on Friday when they take on the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the team’s opening game.  They are also expected to raise the Championship Banner to the Rogers’ Centre rafters before the start of the game.
