Report: Lindy Ruff to Coach Dallas Stars

Reports are circulating from Travis Brown of the Fort-Worth Star Telegram,  that the Dallas Stars are finalizing a contract with Lindy Ruff to be the team’s next head coach.  General Manager Jim Nill fired former Stars head coach Glen Gulutzan shortly after taking over the reigns in Dallas.

In an ironic twist, the news comes just 1 day after the 14th anniversary of Brett Hull’s famous goal/no goal in Game 6 of the 1999 Stanley Cup Finals that clinched the Cup for the Stars.  The coach of the Buffalo Sabres, whom the Stars beat, was none other than Lindy Ruff.

Ruff was the head coach of the Buffalo Sabres for 16 years before being fired mid-campaign this past year.   Ruff led the Sabres to the Stanley Cup Final in 1999 and back to back Eastern Conference Finals in 2006 and 2007.  He also led the team to finish 1st overall and winning the President’s Trophy in 2006-07.  Ruff with a career 532-400-151 record was also the winningest coach in Sabres history.

He has also coached Team Canada in the 2009 and 2013 World Championships, and has been an assistant on the Canadian Olympic Team which won gold in Vancouver in 2010.

Last season the Dallas Stars finished 22-22-4, good for 11th place in the NHL’s Western Conference, missing the playoffs.  The Stars hold the 10th overall pick in this year’s NHL entry draft, along with Boston’s first round pick.

This is the second major move since Nill took over the Wings.  Last week he traded for and then signed, defenceman Sergei Gonchar, formerly of the Ottawa Senators.
