Blocked Calls, Gulf War and Voodoo Dolls

The NFL is a smorgasbord of awesome storylines.  Some are analytical, others are critical, and some are just down right stupid.  It’s the stupid ones I live for – they make my day.  Welcome to Quick Slant.  I created this column as my way of sharing with you the headlines from around the NFL that I feel are most interesting.  I try to offer my own take on the story in as few words as possible – some of us have a wife, kids and a job and don’t have time to read 5000+ word novels!  So, without further ado, I give you today’s version of Quick Slant:

There are reports today that there is a “good chance” someone in the NFL will give Jamarcus Russell another chance.  Apparently he’s lost 27 lbs leaving him at a svelte 560 lbs (or thereabouts).  In related news, the agents for Ryan Leaf and Akili Smith told their assistants to screen all their calls and be sure to block these two……Jason Hanson, the kicker who has been with the Detroit Lions since the Gulf War, is finally calling it a career after 22 seasons.  The Lions are now in the market for a forty-something to fill the void……After working out for the Bills at the beginning of the week, USC‘s Matt Barkley is off to Arizona to do his thang for the Cardinals.  Interestingly, Carson Palmer was seen purchasing a voodoo doll from a flea market, then buying doll-sized USC clothes and darning needles.  One can only imagine……It looks increasingly probable that next year’s Pro Bowl will be based on a draft format.  That will likely draw another four viewers……Roger Goodell has a revolutionary idea – put cameras in the locker rooms to be broadcasted on the stadium big screens – yeah, nothing can possibly go wrong there!……I’ll leave you with a real wall-banger.  After the media storm surrounding the news from the combine of players’ sexual orientation being part of their interviews, the NFL has determined there was nothing wrong with line of questioning.  Huh?  Someone’s getting sued up the arse!

That does it for today.  Check back tomorrow and I’ll have sifted through the day’s headlines and give you what you need to know.
